Small Business Saturday

Today is Small Business Saturday.

We have many great choices here in in the Rochester area when it comes to “mom and pop” operations. That is a good thing. C & G is an official supporter of something called the 3/50 Project. The main premise of this organization is to raise awareness about the importance of shopping at local brick and mortar shops.

According to the 3/50 Project’s website, “If half of the employed population spent $50 each month at locally owned independent businesses, it would generate more than $42.6 billion in revenue…for every $100 spent in locally owned independent stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures.”

When you buy from a small business, you are supporting everyday people -- moms and dads, grandparents, children, etc. -- people who have shops doing something they love.  Maybe the selection isn't as vast or the bargain isn't as "sweet" as big box stores with items stamped "Made in China", but you are helping real people with families earn a living.

So today, I encourage you to shop at your local stores.  My boys are with my hubby at the little barber shop run by elderly an elderly gentleman for decades for haircuts.  We already sipped coffee at a local coffee shop this morning.  Dinner will be at a little family owned Italian restaurant. Skip the chains today and come out and support your community.

Online, you also have choices. Yes, you can do the corporate-led chains, but why not visit Etsy for wonderful gifts handmade by some wonderful artisans?

When you shop small, you're doing a great thing!
