New Year, New Hair Care!

Good morning, friends! It is so great to be back after a much needed break. The boys are back at school and it's a new year and a new day. A couple of weeks before Christmas, I was sent some hair care products from Shielo. I've been testing them now for a good 2.5 weeks or so of daily use and wanted to report back on my experience.

First of all, let me tell you a bit about this company. Shielo began in New York City back in 2001 and was available in fine salons only and in 2007, it became available for clients to buy for their own homes. This ingredients-conscious company really impresses me. Why? In addition to their policy of being cruelty free, the company also rejects the use of synthetic chemicals and pesticides in their formulas. I wish this could be said for most  mainstream companies. Shielo is active in donating to breast cancer research and they have a most impressive sustainability policy.

Prior to this, I had been using shampoos and conditioners from Everyday Shea, Burt's Bees, Cocoa Pink, and Alba. I pretty much use one for a few days and switch off. I just like the variety. For reference, I have a chin length bob. I get highlights every few months and I use a base shade that's a bit lighter than my natural dishwater blond. My hair is also very thick and coarse, so it needs a bit of TLC.

I was sent products from the Color Protect line. I received the Strengthening Shampoo, Reflecting Conditioner, and Antioxidant Leave In Protectant. All three are just lovely.

My Shielo Color Protect products are free of sulfates and parabens and are infused with natural extracts and botanicals. They are oh so gentle in my hair and I could feel a difference in both texture and manageability within 2 uses.

Strengthening Shampoo

Sometimes when you use a sulfate-free shampoo, you can feel a little film on your hair. It can be as though you have a build up and your hair just feels dirty. This is not the case at all with the Shielo. The shampoo lathers gently and just feels soothing to the scalp. There is an ever so gentle natural aroma from the white jasmine as well. The one thing I am compelled to mention is how this formula has helped my hair retain its color. I was actually due to touch up my hair more than a week ago. This formula has made my color last longer, which is a huge deal to me in saving both time and money.

This shampoo is $24.99. I typically do not spend that amount on my shampoo. I am a huge believer in getting great things at a very affordable price. That said, this shampoo is helping my hair to retain its color. I estimate I will need to get my hair colored 2-3 times less per year now. Granted, I do my own so I don't spend much money. If you get your hair colored at the salon, though, how much money will 2-3 less color applications cost you? $150? $200? $300?

The one thing I would also like to note--after about 5 shampoos, I did use a clarifying shampoo because I felt like I still needed to with the styling products I use each day. This is not outside the norm for me, though.

My grade: A

Reflecting Conditioner

I really like this product. I like that it keeps my hair moisturized and soft like a "deep conditioner" would without it making my hair feel coated or greasy at all. This also is protein rich and contains white jasmine and it just works beautifully with the shampoo. You simply leave it in for a minute and a half and rinse. I also like to comb it through right after applying, although it doesn't say to on the bottle. It's just something I like to do. It rinses well and makes detangling a breeze. Again, one of the key benefits of the Color Protect line is color preservation and it does its job well!

Leave In Protectant

As you can tell from my thoughts on the first two products, I am now a Shielo fan. This product, though, is actually my favorite! For over 10 years,  I have used a product from Bumble and bumble called Tonic Lotion. It is a spray designed to soothe and detangle the hair and prepare it for styling. In all honestly, I was kind of dreading using something else. When I test products, though, I stop using what I have been using in order to give a fair appraisal. Wow. I love this 10 times more than my old favorite. This is a beautifully crafted product! How often do you see peptides in your haircare? Peptides are right near the top of the ingredients list, coming it at number 2. The third ingredient is shea butter. This is a true treatment for your hair and worth every single penny.

I just spritz in a very small amount after I have towel-dried my hair and then blow dry and flat iron as usual. My hair just feels like it is in much better condition. It doesn't feel rough or damaged from the heat styling.

I {heart} this product. So much!

The Chic & Green Bottom Line:

Here goes. I do NOT like to spend much money at all on products. Maybe you could even call me a hair product cheapskate. You know that after reading for all this time. Every now and then, though, a really good product comes along that is worth it. I say this because I truly believe that if I invest in this hair care trio, it'll preserve my color as I've already seen, save me money, and save something equally as precious--my time! I will definitely be purchasing more when this runs out. Incidentally, I need to use a very small amount of product to achieve great results.

Shielo can be found at and in fine salons.

Disclosure: I received these products at no cost. This in no way has influenced the review and all opinions are my own.
