Small Business Saturday

We all know about Black Friday and the newer Cyber Monday, but what about Small Business Saturday?

Today is the first ever Small Business Saturday! This is a day, according to the Small Business Saturday Facebook page " support the local businesses that create jobs, boost the economy and preserve neighborhoods around the country. Small Business Saturday is a national movement to drive shoppers to local merchants across the U.S. More than a dozen advocacy, public and private organizations have already joined American Express OPEN, the company’s small business unit, in declaring the Saturday after Thanksgiving as Small Business Saturday."

This is a wonderful idea. It has garnered much media attention and rightfully so. I didn't do the Black Friday thing....I much prefer to sleep in. If I am up at 2am or, heaven forbid, don't sleep at all--well, let's just say I am a miserable person to deal with! I did go to Macy's yesterday afternoon, but it was at a mall that is getting ready to undergo renovations, so there are only 2 stores and it wasn't busy. There's really nothing wrong with big box stores per se, but if you haven't taken a look at the "Made in ____" tag, do so. You'll essntially see "Made in China" or Made in Anywhere but the USA.

Small Business Saturday is devoted to people who have the dream to run their own shop, take pride in what they do, and want to give customers a more personalized experience.

As a small business owner (online), I understand that you have many options. You can buy earrings for $2 that are made in China and might have lead in them. You can buy a scarf for under $10 that thousands of other people will wear. You can buy a 10 pack of soap for 5 bucks at the big box stores or a greeting card for 99 cents.

It is different with small businesses or handmade businesses. You get people who love what they do creating with their hands. The quality and workmanship shows. I think of a scarf from Excessary compared to those in box box stores and there is just no comparison.

You can compare a bar of Aunt Nancy's Handmade Soaps to a multipack of Zest--well, no you can't. There just is no comparison. Hers are gift worthy. They are full of healthy ingredients.

Locally, I have several favorite small businesses I recommend supporting not just today on Small Business Saturday, but always.

Makiki Gift Shop on Long Pond Road by Talbots is one. Eleventh Hour at Twelve Corners in Brighton is another. Jackson & Hines in Pittsford will take care of all of the beauty gifts you might want (they have Carols' Daughter, too!). Of course, there is Parkleigh on Park Avenue and Craft Company No. 6 on University Avenue.

If you want to find a great assortment of handmade finds locally, find 2 great ones in Greece: Craft & Antique Co-Op and Liberty Hollow. A trip to Wayne County is also in order. Do all of these in one day-- head to LW Emporium in Ontario and  Good Old Days Country Shop in Pultneyville. A hidden treasure is located in Williamson, too. It's called The Country Attic and it is located in the Williamson Hardware Store. Seriously. Walk through the store and head up the stairs for a wonderful assortment of candles, cards, decor, ornaments and so much more!

While you're in Penfield getting cupcakes at Dollop, walk over to the four corners in the village to Simply Fabulous Boutique (20% off there today!) and to The Enchanted Rose Garden. By the way, if you take Heather a cupcake ornament to hang on the pink tree at Dollop, you'll get a free cupcake!

Of course, I must mention my favorite little boutique: Vintage Bliss. It is owned by Sheryn Kelderhouse and is on Rte. 250 (North Ave.) in Webster. You can step inside this treasure and Sheryn will pour you some coffee as you browse. She has a lovely assortment of gifts, including my jewelry. TODAY she has 25% off everything in the shop!
