The Holiday Spirit

Today I was doing some online shopping for Christmas and noticed a counter: 37 days until Christmas. It is amazing how fast time flies--it seems to fly even faster when you have children who grow so fast. These past few days, I've been really getting into the holiday spirit. One week from today is Thanksgiving and I'll be preparing our big dinner while the boys watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on television, just as I did as a child each year.

Christmas with my brother when I was really little...

The lovely Kristen, who also lives in this town, posted on her Facebook page today that she is in the mood to start decorating. I'll start decorating the house on Black Friday (I promise you won't see this non morning person fighting for a parking spot at the mall that day!) and I am eagerly anticipating dragging the boxes up from the basement to do so.

I cannot wait to start playing Christmas carols. I love to have the music playing softly in the background all day long as we get into December--I usually alternate the Muppets Christmas songs I used to enjoy as a child with Burl Ives, Frank Sinatra, and Josh Groban. I look forward to making bark, cookies, fudge, and pies. I look forward to decorating the trees.

What I most enjoy about the season, though, is the feeling of pure magic and  joy I get as a mother watching the boys experience the festivities. The past couple weeks, Nick and Ben have been wearing out the pages of the Toys R Us and Target holiday toy books the way I used to with the Sears and JC Penney toy catalogs.

They've been adding on to their Santa lists, too:

A sampling of the lists...please excuse Ben, as I think he meant to write Pizza Planet (the "Toy Story 3" toy) rather than Piss a Planet

Beginning Monday, C & G will be doing a daily gift guide feature with loads of gift ideas. I want to keep these focused on handmade and affordably priced, too. Also look for more recipes again...if you remember last year, I shared lots of recipes for edible gifts. Look for these again this year.

By the way, if you are local and you do not have time to shop or get frustrated by the crowds, Chandelierious is what you've been looking for. The fabulous Elizabeth is an expert shopper and decorator. She can have your gifts picked out and your home decorated for the holidays just like that. Head to her blog for more details.
