What's In It Wednesday: Avon Anew Clinical Eye Lift

It is rare that you will see a really positive What's In It Wednesday, but this time I am happy to tell you about a product I have been using myself and simply love~love~love.

As you know I stopped making skin care in 2009. I had planned to keep making products for friends and family and still have another batch to make up, but after that I am just done because I no longer have the energy or passion for it. Serums and oils and such are one thing, but formulating creams is another. Plus the cost of supplies for a small batch is much more money than when I was buying raw materials in bulk.

These past few weeks I have been testing many products. Some are nice. Some are horrible. Companies have managed to both impress and disappoint me with skin care products and when I find something I like that is worthy of my seal of approval (and recommendation to customers who no longer have access to my products), I am more than happy to talk about them.

The product I'm talking about is stellar. I used to use it when it first came out a few years ago, but that was the old formulation...This is the new formulation and it is about 75% different than the old. If you tried the old recipe and didn't love it, try this.

I am not really an AVON fan. In recent years, though, the company has started to take more of an interest in the ingredients used and they really have done a fabulous job with this eye cream. It is preserved without formaldehyde derivatives or parabens and really is a beautiful product.

It is a 2-part jar. The top gel is for the brown bone and upper lid area. The bottom is a cream for under the eyes. I am extremely impressed by this product and have no reservations about recommending it it you.

Just in case you're wondering, I do not sell Avon. It retails for $28, which I think is a bit much for an Avon product, but you can find it on eBay for around $10 (just make sure it's not the old one) and it's frequently part of the Avon special offers.

The beneficial ingredients I have highlighted in lavender. The ones I would like to look at more and further discuss are in red.

Why this actually works:

Punica Granatum Fruit Juice--Pomegranate juice. EXCELLENT for the skin. I used this in many of my own products, and it is SO nice to see this near the top of the ingredients list! It can help fight free radicals and is high in omega 5 fatty acids. It can help with cell growth and restore skin's softness and elasticity.

Portulaca Oleracea Extract--you may have portulaca right in your garden. Portulaca is also known as pig weed. What is unique about this is that it is very high in Omege 3 fatty acids and vitamins C and E. It is also anti-inflammatory. This isn't widely used in skin care, but I have a feeling we'll be seeing more and more of it.

Olive Leaf Extract--Skin soothing and nourishing

Coffee Seed Extract--the large amount of this is why I adore this product. The coffee seed helps to increase circulation, brighten the skin, and is anti-inflammatory. These properties help reduce under eye puffiness and dark circles. Many products have caffeine (this does as well at the bottom of the list), but by putting such a large amount of actual coffee seed extract, this product can really help (of course the effects would go away when you stop using it).

Carrot Root Extract--The beta carotene and high amounts of vitamin A in the carrot root are wonderul anti-aging ingredients and help to maintain skin elasticity. Carrot is wonderful for preventing the appearance of aging and wrinkles.

Ilex Paraguariensis Leaf Extract--This is also known as Yerba Mate. It is actually related to the holly family and has been shown to fight free radicals in the environment, thus helping the skin fight damage.

Fennel Fruit Extract--this is wonderful for preventing fluid buildup and puffiness

Alfalfa Extract--chock full of vitamins and minerals, including anti-aging vitamin A, niacin, beta carotene. This is fantastic in skin care and would be great in an eye cream.

Carrageenan--polysaccharides derived from red seaweed. Helps to soften the skin.

Hibiscus Extract--from hibiscus flowers, this gives a temporary firming appearance to the skin

Sweet Almond Extract--won't clog pores; wonderful for dry skin. Absorbs quite easily.

Caffeine--This is the last ingredient on the list, so it is VERY minute in terms of how much is in here. My guess is about 0.05-0.5 percent of the total formulation. In other words, there is not enough to do anything. However, caffeine in topical form can constrict blood vessels and help brighten the under eye area. Any of that in this product, though, is from the coffee up above.

PEG-60 Almond Glycerides--I do not recommend PEG ingredients, as they may be contaminated and very harmful. These are derived from natural almond oil and while I do not like PEG ingredients, there is a very small concentration in here and since there are not other questionable ingredients, I would not skip the product because of this.

Potassium Hydroxide--This is used in the soap making process to saponify oils. It is used to make liquid soaps. It is also a buffering agent and a pH adjuster, so while it seems scary to see it in here, it is OK.

The Chic & Green Bottom Line:

I adore this eye cream. I thought finding a good eye cream (I have tried decent ones, but none this good, out there on the market) would be a huge challenge. I would rate this a good 4.5 out of 5 stars. The new formulation is simply wonderful!
