Tuesday's Essential Oil: Carrot Seed

Daucus Carota

Carrot Seed Essential Oil is one of my favorite oils for skin care purposes.

Carrot Seed Essential Oil, Daucus Carota, is steam distilled from the dried seeds of & less commonly, from the actual dried plant of the Wild Carrot.

I love to use this because it contains high amounts of both Vitamin A and Carotene. Both are very potent antioxidants. When used on this skin (either diluted in a carrier oil or when found in skin care products), carrot seed can help to repair damage already done by free radicals. While many essential oils are not corrective, this is one that has shown to be both corrective and preventive.

Carrot Seed's effect on the skin can be visible after just a few days of use, starting with a more radiant appearance. Often when our skin looks dull or sallow, carrot seed can help give it that "boost" we need. The past couple weeks I have been more tired than normal, and my skin has felt its effects. I typically use the Rosewater & Aloe Facial Mist, but I have switched to the Carrot Seed & Chamomile because my skin responds to the carrot seed in these times.

In addition to being a powerful antioxidant, Carrot Seed Essential Oil works well as an antiviral agent. People have found that skin infections have been treated well with carrot seed. Conditions such as psoriasis, contact dermatitis and eczema also can find some relief with this oil.

People with mature skin can also reap the rewards of using this essential oil. It will make the skin softer, and can rejuvenate and tone the skin's texture which results in a more youthful appearance.

In health care, carrot seed oil is used by homeopathic practitioners for many ailments, especially those relating to liver health. Many have found that this can help to regenerate and detoxify the liver as well as treat symptoms of jaundice.  Carrot Seed also may help the kidneys and gallbladder. More recent findings have shown that carrot seed may also have an effect on those with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RH). The standard dosage when used in holistic health care is 1 drop per day taken orally. Carrot Seed is not recommended during pregnancy, however.
