A Reader's Question Answered
I receive many emails about various products, Indie and retail. The lovely Jillian sent me an email at the end of last week and I apologize for not posting this sooner.
I enjoy your blog. The Pure Blends and Organic Wear reviews have been helpful while I am shopping. I do not shop online but am wanting to be more natural with my products. I never have and do not think I will buy on the internet. I like to run into Target or Walmart and buy my products in person. Besides Cetaphil cleanser, do you have recommendations for a skin and hair care routine I can buy at the drugstore? My skin is kind of dry and my hair is colored. I don't really care about aging yet because I am 26. I also don't like spending more than I have to. What do you recommend?
Well, Jillian, I do have some great products to recommend found right in most Target stores, drugstores, and even in grocery stores. There are many great options for not much money. You just need to look over your ingredients and make some informed choices. Going by what you have told me, I'm going to list some basics for you.
First of all, you are young and your most imporant skin care ingredient for the prevention of aging is a good sunscreen. See recommendations below.
Before I start, I have to say that I absolutely do not recommend Cetaphil. Read a past blog feature on this cleanser for my reasons.
If you wear stubborn makeup or are wearing sunscreen (please do), start my removing those with olive oil or jojoba oil.
For a gentle cleanser, I recommend Dr. Bronner's Organic Fair Trade Shikaki Soap. It can be used to wash your face, as a body wash, and as a hand soap. In a pinch, you can even use it to wash your hair. I even use mine to cleanser my EcoTools makeup brushes.
Next I would suggest a gentle, alcohol free toner. A good one is Kiss My Face Balancing Act Toner for All Skin Types.
For your moisturizer, I actually like the Beeswax Moisturizing Day Creme from Burt's Bees as long as you're not oily. Don't forget your sunscreen. For natural alternatives found in many stores, I recommend Nature's Gate and California Baby for adults as well.
For your hair, I highly recommend the Burt's Bees line, especially the Green Tea & Fennel if your hair is color-treated. It is the one retail brand I will always use in my hair (I alternate with Etsy's In a Lather).
To style your hair, try Giovanni brand products.
All of the above can be found at most Target stores. The sunscreens are available at my Wegmans, too.
